How to do Civil War Research

By Richard A Sauers

Paperback 160 pages

Published April 2000

Lately not only historians, but metal detectorists and others, are interested in researching the Civil War. It may be because they are tracking their family history or they could be researching to see how their local area figured into America’s Civil War. Of course we as detectorists know how important research is. Whatever the reason what you don’t want to do is jump out there blindly and waste your time.

This book should be read before you do your research because it will cut down on the time and expenses you will have and get you the information faster. You won’t find the information in this book but it will tell you the best sources for obtaining that information.

Some of the chapters in this book cover libraries, historical societies, church records, and census records. Also included are internet records and site which are not covered in other publications very well. The book states in the beginning that the four most important things you need to get the information you want are patience, persistence, networking, and organization. In my opinion for the person who wants to research the civil war this is the first book you should read.
